Prompt#30 Business Card

Chapter 24:

Ami stood at the Tsukino’s doorstep, panic in her heart with what she was about to do. Could she really go through with this? Was this the best decision for her friend? She took a deep breath, after all she wasn’t certain that Usagi’s parents would hire Mamoru to be Usagi’s tutor anyways… right?

She took a deep breath as she knocked on the door and felt her heart accelerate as she heard the voice of Usagi’s mother.

“Hi, Ami, Usagi isn’t here right now. I thought she went to go hang out with you and the girls after classes.”

“She did. She went mall trawling with Rei and Makoto. I actually came to speak to you about someone who could possibly tutor Usagi.”

“Oh. Come in.” Mrs. Tsukino said as she led Ami to the kitchen. “Would you like some cookies?”

“No, ma’am.” Ami reached into her bag and pulled out the slip of paper Unazuki had given her. “I know its not exactly a business card, but one of our friends from the Fruit Parlor says that he’s a tutor and top of his class at Moto Azabu Private School, his name is Mamoru Chiba.”

“How old is he?”

“He’s 16.” Ami had made up her mind, maybe this is the kind of tutor Usagi really did need, but she couldn’t help but feel as though she was betraying her friend.

“That’s an elite school, do you think he would have the time or the patience to help Usagi?”

“Our friend said that she had contacted him and he gave the okay to hand over his contact information to you.” Ami took a deep breath, she was going to have to explain something to Usagi’s mother. “If you decide to go with him I would suggest not telling Usagi who her new tutor is…”

“Why not?” Mrs. Tsukino’s brow raised in an attempt to figure out why her daughter’s friend would say such a thing.

“Usagi and Mamoru know each other. I don’t know if she’s ever spoken of a boy who likes to tease her?”

“Is this him?” Mrs. Tsukino asked as she glanced down to look at the slip of paper in her hand. “Why suggest him then?”

“I feel like he might be just the motivation she needs.” Ami explained, “He teases her and she usually tries to one up by proving him wrong.”

“So you think that maybe through his provocations she might get angry enough to try to focus more.”

“Yes. I’ve seen her get the highest score on the Sailor V game at the arcade after he told her that it would be impossible for her.” Ami’s eyes closed as she remembered all the instances where Usagi had gone out of her way to prove Mamoru wrong. “I don’t know how to explain their relationship but whenever she’s sad or upset or her self confidence runs low all it takes is Mamoru saying a simple sentence and there’s a determination in her that I never see any other time. Like she has to prove to him that she isn’t who he thinks she is.”

“Hmm…” Mrs. Tsukino thought about it. Ami’s reasoning made sense, sometimes the greatest motivation was trying to prove someone wrong. “Mr. Tsukino and I will meet with him and see where we go from there. You may have a point about him being the motivation she needs.”

“Thank you for listening Mrs. Tsukino, I have to go, I still have to make it to cram school.” Ami said as she stood up and left with a clear conscious, after all the she could only suggest it and it was really up to Usagi’s parents to make the decison.

“Let me walk you to the door.” Mrs. Tsukino said as she led Ami back out.
