Yet another idea that came out of nowhere. ~~~~ Kaitlin Thomas stared at her phone like it had just gone crazy. She had just imagined that her boyfriend called her up and broke things off so he could be with a waitress they met the previous Friday. Completely absurd! How could he want to end a three-year relationship for someone he knew for only a few days? "Katie? Are you still there?" the tinny voiced called through the phone. She looked at it again and put it back to her ear. "I just had the weirdest thing happen. I swear I just heard you say that you wanted to break up." "I do. I'm sorry Katie, but this is love." "I thought what we had was love!" because she couldn't think of anything else to do she slammed the phone down onto its cradle. Kaitlin wanted to cry. She wanted to break something. She wanted to yell at Chris. Her slender hand was already on the phone when it rang. She snatched it up and snarled into the receiver. "Listen you jerk! You can't just do this to me! What happened to getting married, hmmm? What about a family? You're just going to let our plans go down the drain just for some floozy you met at a bar?" A soft voice interrupted huskily, "Sorry to call you at such a bad time, but can I please speak to a Ms. Kaitlin Thomas?" Feeling more than a little mortified, Kaitlin sighed. "This is she." She pinched the bridge of her nose and tried to focus on what he was saying and not trying to kill Chris. "How can I help you?" "You're fired." "Excuse me?" she choked. This had to be some horrific joke. "Sorry, but you've lost your job." He proceeded to explain something about a merger and departments being downsized, but it was beyond her comprehension at the moment. "Are you ok, ma'am?" "Uh, yeah. Whatever. Bye." She hung up and stared out at the bright sky. The birds were flying overhead in the incredibly blue sky, chasing each other in intricate patterns as they darted to and fro. Kaitlin watched mesmerized for a moment before the information she had gather in the past fifteen minutes sunk in. She was jobless and her boyfriend had just dumped her for a hussy he'd met while on a date with her. She looked out the window again. And outside everything was as it was before the world came crashing down around her. There was no justice in the universe. If there was everything out there would cease to be and everyone would be as angry as she was right now. Kaitlin pushed her small frame out of the chair she had somehow slumped into and stalked around the room weighing whether or not she should drive over to Chris' and punch him in the head or to call and order two large pizzas and gorge her feelings away. Figuring that driving over to Chris' would just be too pathetic and humiliating so she ordered the pizzas and took a long hot bath while she waited. Submerged in a sea of foam and warm water, she wondered how everything had gone insane in the blink of an eye. Hauling herself out of the tub, she wrapped her favourite robe around her and shuffled back out into the living area of her apartment. There was a knock at the door just as she passed it. "Thank goodness the pizzas are here." She grabbed her purse off of the side table and opened the door. The adolescent dressed in a delivery uniform she was expecting was not on the other side. Instead a tall gorgeous man stood in an expensive looking suit holding her pizzas. Kaitlin stared at his dark hair and smooth feature for a moment, taking everything about him in. her eyes swept up his very tall form looking over his finely cut suit and how well his shoulders filled it out, then up to his strong chin and languid smile before resting on his sparkling green eyes that reminded her of the jewels her grandmother used to wear. "Are you done?" he teased. His eyes took a similar path to hers but his quickly reminded her that she wasn't wearing anything underneath the robe. Kaitlin snapped out of it and blushed brightly. "Who are you? And what are you doing with my pizzas?" she closed the neck to the only thing separating her skin from his inquisitive eyes more securely. He cleared his throat and smiled. "Let me see. Does this ring a bell?" he cleared his throat again. "Sorry ma'am but you're fired." Kaitlin stared at him for a moment, slack jawed. "So do you remember me?" he drawled. "Oh yeah, I remember you." And Kaitlin did the only thing that came to mind. She punched him in the nose and slammed the door in his face. ~~~~ As usual if you have anything to say I'd love to hear it. :) Aria |
